Organic SEO

The term “Organic SEO” refers to all the things you can do to and with a website to make it appear higher in search engine results other than through buying ads. Activities related to organic search engine optimization are described below.

Site Evaluation

The first step of any search engine optimization program is to evaluate where the site currently stands with the search engines. Our evaluation process includes:

  • Determination of whether the site violates any search engine rules (See our article "8 Proven Methods for Getting Blacklisted by the Search Engines" for more information.)
  • Understanding which pages of the existing site are appearing in search engines, if any
  • Analysis of the current meta tag handling
  • Evaluation of the volume and formatting effectiveness of content

These are just a few of the items that are analyzed during the website evaluation process. If you'd like to learn more about our site website analysis, contact Lisa Emrich at 585-454-4210 or lemrich@bizwonk.com. Lisa can send you a sample of the extensive site evaluation spreadsheet which we prepare for each client prior to beginning search engine optimization work.

Keyword Analysis

Keywords are the words and phrases which potential customers or contacts are most likely to think about when looking for your company's products and services. Since searches are conducted using keywords, ensuring that those phrases are properly presented throughout your site is very important. The first step of any SEO process therefore needs to be the keyword analysis. All other activities will use the results of this analysis when implementing SEO techniques. Some aspects of the keyword analysis process are listed below:

  • Identify targeted products, services, benefits, or other items on which the website should be focused
  • Define audiences to determine if multiple viewpoints and goals exist
  • Identify key buyer interests and company differentiators
  • Consider hot buzzwords or tie ins to topical issues
  • Determine appropriate key phrases for each audience
  • Analyze current performance of phrase variations in each of the major search engines
  • Identify the "high performing" phrases for each engine

Competitive Keyword Analysis

Looking at how your competition handles keywords can be very useful in developing your own strategies. This service provides a high level analysis of 3 competitor websites, and delivers findings on keyword use within on screen and off screen text, along with reports on how well their keywords perform.

Basic Site Optimization

Basic website optimization is ensuring that basic “SEO 101” rules and practices are followed. This service includes the activities described below.

  • Ensure that unique keyword rich title metatags exist for each page
  • Ensure that unique keyword rich description metatags exist for each page
  • Ensure that kewords metatags exist for each page
  • Ensure that the robots.txt file is in place and is properly formatted

Content Review and Recommendations

Content is one of the key determiners of search engine ranking. With our content evaluation service, BizWonk reviews site content to evaluate the overall volume, the degree of potential usefulness or interest by end users, the effectiveness of keyword saturation, and the use of formatting such as bolding, bullets, etc. Recommendations will be made for ways in which content can be modified to help increase search engine standing.

For more information about content, please review the Copy Writing page of this website.

Link Strategies and Recommendations

An increasingly important driver of search engine ranking is the presence of links to your site from other well-ranked web sites. The opposite is also true; links from low ranking or blacklisted sites count against your site. Google uses a complicated algorithm for the number of links coming in and how well those sites are ranked to feed into the overall ranking of your own site. Finding appropriate partner companies and sites to form linking alliances with is therefore a useful endeavor.

Search Engine Submission Activities

When a website is new it is important that it be “submitted” to the major search engines and directories so that they begin indexing it as quickly as possible. If you have a site that has been live for some time, it is probably already appearing in at least some of the major search engines. One of the tasks in our initial evaluation process is to determine which engines are not yet indexing your site, and our subsequent SEO activities would include submission to them.

Search engines and directories are increasingly moving toward a fee basis for inclusion, and for many companies who are establishing a new website presence, paying for inclusion in some of these venues makes sense. Give us a call at 585-454-4210 or send us a note to info@bizwonk.com to learn more about paid inclusion programs.

Hand Submission versus Automated Submission

You may have seen email spam notices offering to submit your site to 3,000 search engines for only $9.99 a month, or some other seemingly amazing deal. The truth is that the top engines get very annoyed by the barrage of repetitive submissions performed by these automated systems, and in some cases will even ban or blacklist your site if it is associated with one of these submission services. For these engines, hand submission is the only answer. Because of this reality, BizWonk performs all submission services by hand.

Hand submission services for search engines and directories include:

Google

Yahoo!

Web Beacon

JoeAnt

Skaffe

Aeiwi

Aesop

ExactSeek

Open Directory Project

EntireWeb

Jayde

KellySearch

NOTE: This list is intended to be representational only, since search engine and directory submission best practices continue to evolve.

Industry-Specific Directories

Some industries have engines and portals which are specific to a particular line of business, industry, or interest. This activity identifies and submits your site to these engines if they exist for your industry. As part of our monthly SEO monitoring and submission services, we will submit your site to new engines and directories as they become available.
